The breakthrough did arrive in the 15th minute, though, with Toni Kroos’ free-kick flicked on by Bale before Ramos prodded his effort under Oblak from close range.

Atletico will be making its third appearance in the Champions League/European Cup final, while Real Madrid have reached the Champions League/European Cup final for the 14th time.

For Atletico, the pain of this final defeat may yet prove more fatal than that of two years ago.

Carrasco’s goal handed a reprieve to Antoine Griezmann following the France forward’s penalty miss in normal time.

But it was another demoralising end for Diego Simeone’s Atletico who were within a minute of winning the 1974 European Cup final and 2014 Champions League finals but conceded equalisers and eventually lost them both.

Atletico Madrid fans know a thing or two about heartbreak.

However, the goal did come with some controversy, as it appears as if Ramos was just a hair offside.

Benzema could have likely sealed the win in the 70th when sent clear on goal but Oblak blocked the Frenchman’s shot with his chest.

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos calmly nudges the ball across the chalk in the 14th minute to secure the early lead.

Atletico substitute Yannick Carrasco showed the same desire when he leveled in the 79th, outmuscling Lucas Vazquez to shoot Juanfran’s pass high into the net.
