After Getafe got on the board with a goal from outside the area by midfielder Pablo Sarabia, James and Portuguese super-striker Cristiano Ronaldo both connected on scores in the final minutes of the contest to put the icing on the victory.
Barcelona still lead the way due to a superior head-to-head record over Atletico, and they also have the upper hand over third-placed Real Madrid who are one point behind.
“I think we have a better chance of winning the league because we keep on getting closer”, Zidane told reporters.
Benzema then teed up Isco and Gareth Bale either side of half-time before late goals from James Rodriguez and Ronaldo sealed another comprehensive win.
In other afternoon games Las Palmas and Sporting Gijon drew 1-1 with goals by Bigas (3′) and Jony (48′); Eibar won 2-1 over Real Sociedad: goals by Zurutuza (7′), Enrich (32′) and Escalante (58′).
The changes took some sting out of Real’s play and Getafe were rewarded for their endeavor in the final quarter when former Real academy prospect Sarabia curled into the top corner.
“We tried”, said Esnaider, praising his players’ attitude.
