Madrid face a possible expulsion from the Copa del Rey after Cheryshev started and scored in their 3-1 win over Cadiz on Wednesday, despite questions over whether the Russian had served a suspension.

Cadiz president Manuel Vizcaino said his club would report Real to the Spanish federation.

“The club reiterates its utmost respect for Real Madrid and will not make any further statements until there is an announcement from the Competition Committee, who will dictate the magnitude of what happened”.

“Real Madrid feel vindicated in their arguments and will present the actions necessary, confident that the final resolution will be in the club’s favour”.

“We read the report, evaluated the situation and weighed up our decision”.

“I have already answered, we did everything we could at this time”, he affirmed.

“Real Madrid was not aware of the existence of any sanction, no one communicated that to us”.

“Real Madrid are a great club, admired all over Spain, and by me”. “At a board meeting we made a decision to appeal Madrid’s improper team”, he told AS. “No one knew”, Perez said (via ESPN FC) on Thursday.

Real Madrid soon could be disqualified from the Copa del Rey tournament for fielding a suspended player.

Meanwhile, Real director, Emilio Butragueno, said their fate will be decided by a judge.

“We had no notification from the RFEF or Villarreal”.

Speaking after the game, Cheryshev explained that he “did not receive any notification from Villarreal” and was therefore unaware he should have been suspended.

Suspensions in the Copa Del Rey carry forward to the next season and a new season doesn’t see players forgiven for their transgressions in the previous campaign.

“After finding out at half time, we substituted [Cheryshev] immediately to show good faith”.
