Real Madrid kicked out of Copa del Rey for fielding ineligible player

“The club reiterates its utmost respect for Real Madrid and will not make any further statements until there is an announcement from the Competition Committee, who will dictate the magnitude of what happened”.

Isco scored twice after the break before Cristian Marquez’s late consolation rounded off the scoring in a 3-1 Madrid win.

And in 2001, current Real Madrid coach Rafael Benítez was in charge of Valencia when that team was thrown out of the same competition for fielding four non-EU players when only three were permitted.

Cheryshev was on loan at Villarreal last season and his suspension was triggered by a yellow card he picked up in the second leg of last season’s cup semi-final against Barcelona.

Benítez told Real’s website: “Clearly, the club did not know anything”.

“The RFEF has accepted our appeal and time has been given to Real Madrid to present a defense they deem relevant”, the Cadiz statement said.

Cheryshev was substituted for Mateo Kovacic at half-time.

Nevertheless, Cadiz president Manuel Vizcaino has confirmed the club has reported Real for the transgression. Florentino Perez had earlier said that the club would appeal any punishment meted out for fielding Cheryshev.

Sky Sports’ Spanish football expert Guillem Balague said: “The news is that Denis Cheryshev was included in the line-up for the Copa del Rey match with Cadiz”.

“Nobody at the club was informed by the federation, we received nothing from Villarreal and Cheryshev didn’t know about the ban.

This is the opinion after consulting the legal services of Real Madrid”, Perez said following a board meeting on Thursday. If the player is not notified of his sanction, as article 41 states, then the sanction is not in effect’.

The aforementioned source go on to report that it is likely Real Madrid and Cadiz will find out the result of the whole problem later today.
