Fantasy drama series “Game of Thrones” and comedy “Veep” proved repeat winners for cable giant HBO at the Emmy awards on Sunday, but newcomers and actors of color also made their mark in a ceremony where election-year politics played large. “We’re not mailing this to her. Dame Maggie has been nominated for nine Emmys since 1993, five of which as an Outstanding Supporting Actress in Downton Abbey, in which she plays the irascible Dowager Countess, Lady Violet.

Oh sure, white men still won plenty of awards, but even host Jimmy Kimmel made some jokes about how the open acceptance of diversity wasn’t necessarily “good” for him. “It’s called the Maggie Smith rule”.
