Rebel Wilson to star in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels remake

As if wishing to prove correct the accusation that Hollywood is now engaged in a mission to gender swap its entire back catalogue – as if that goes some way to addressing issues of inequality within the industry – MGM has announced its intention to remake Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, as a female-led project.

Steve Martin and Michael Caine starred in the 1988 comedy as two con men, one unsophisticated and one suave, in the French Riviera who join forces to swindle a supposed heiress.

The Pitch Perfect star has taken to Twitter to announce the casting news, writing: “The CON is ON!”

“The CON is ON! I will be starring in a remake of DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS for MGM”. Neither do we know who will star opposite Wilson at this stage. MGM has not yet set a director or a writer, as the Dirty Rotten Scoundrels remake is still in development.

It’s the latest example of what seems to be becoming a trend in Hollywood – particularly in the wake of buzz over the female leads in the recently released “Ghostbusters” reboot. The Paul Feig-directed Ghostbusters – starring Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones as the ghoul-hunting heroes – opened in July.
