Record-breaking night for Game of Thrones at the Emmys

He wasn’t entirely kidding.

Susanne Bier won for directing the AMC limited series The Night Manager, breaking The People v. O.J. Simpson’s stranglehold on the limited series category. Kimmel noted that Sarah Paulson, who was nominated (and won) for her portrayal of prosecutor Marcia Clark in the series, had brought Clark with her to the ceremony. You must be present to win.

Game of Thrones earned a lot of the wins it got, but the good part of “Battle of the Bastards” – which won for Best Writing – wasn’t in the script.

With its win Sunday night for outstanding drama, the sprawling HBO fantasy drama collected its 38th Emmy, surpassing the former NBC comedy’s 37 for a primetime series. The star-studded night ended with “Game of Thrones” and “Veep” winning the big outstanding drama and outstanding comedy awards during the show at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

The People v OJ Simpson: American Crime Story, the television drama based on the murder trial of OJ Simpson, was named outstanding limited series, while Sarah Paulson, Courtney B Vance and Sterling K Brown won awards for their roles in the show. “We are so glad to know that people enjoy the show nearly as much as we enjoy making it”.

“I’m happy to be able to stand with this in my hand for the team, happy that there was no one from ‘People vs. O.J.’ in my category”, she said.

Bush asked Kimmel if he was a nominee, and when Kimmel said yes, Bush said, “Wow, what’s that like?”

And, yes, Donald Trump was also a featured player at the Emmys.

In his opening monologue, the host said he was holding “Celebrity Apprentice” producer Mark Burnett responsible for the “Donald Trump phenomenon”.

“Thanks to Mark Burnett, we don’t have to watch reality shows anymore, because we’re living them”, Kimmel said.

You expect mean from Jimmy Kimmel. “Miley Cyrus or Cee Lo?” No one can even really begrudge Julia Louis-Dreyfus her fifth win too as Outstanding Actress in a Comedy, Veep is ruthlessly brilliant in so many ways.

The 1970s were the most kind to first-time winners, with 15 victories in total. “Our show started out as a political satire but it now feels like a sobering documentary”, she said while accepting the award.

She promised to “rebuild that wall and make Mexico pay for it”. In a nicely pointed joke, Kimmel said the only thing TV people value more than diversity is congratulating themselves on how much they value diversity. Specifically, they compiled a list of the youngest Emmy winners ever.

Netflix series Master of None scored its first Emmy award, winning outstanding writing for a comedy series.

Jeffrey Tambor, who won as lead actor in a comedy for the second year in a row for “Transparent” – in which plays a trans woman adjusting to her new life – also made a plea for those in positions to hire to give transgender talent a chance. “This is other-izing with a capital O. He needs to be called out every chance we get for being one of most risky monsters to ever approach our lifetimes”, Soloway said. Do that. (.) I would not be unhappy were I the last cisgender male to play a female transgender on television. “We’re not mailing this to her”, Kimmel said, coming onstage after her name was announced.

Other Emmy newcomers included Canadian Tatiana Maslany, a surprise best drama actress victor who beat out presumed front runner Robin Wright for playing a woman with multiple cloned personalities in “Orphan Black“. “There’s 17 million Asian Americans in this country, and there’s 17 million Italian Americans”, Yang said.

Jeffrey Tambor and Rami Malek also took home awards, and the big victor was the FX miniseries “The People vs. O.J. Simpson”, which will get it’s own article. “We have a long way to go”.
