Record crowd watches Vols pound Hokies

Part of those rushing yards were due to the play at quarterback.

The game set a college football attendance record with 156,990 fans in attendance. Tennessee DE Jonathan Kongbo (ankle/foot) left in the first quarter but was able to return. Hope is not lost though at the Virginia Tech Hokies visit the seventeenth ranked Tennessee Volunteers. In the Battle at Bristol, under the national spotlight, the Tennessee Volunteers came back to life. Dobbs ran in a score from five yars out to give the Vols a 24-14 lead at the half.

According to Bristol officials, it took more than 1,500 workers 19 days to transform the speedway into the football arena.

His set at Tennessee’s Bristol Motor Speedway ahead of the Pilot Flying J Battle at Bristol between Tennessee and Virginia Tech, billed as the world’s largest college football game, was his final show of the year. Previously, the record belonged to Michigan Stadium as 115,109 people witnessed Michigan taking on Notre Dame on September 7, 2013.

“Just an unbelievable spectacle”. Tennessee (2-0) responded by scoring 31 straight points, including 24 in the second period.

“We didn’t have a great week of practice, for whatever reason that is, I don’t know”, said Rogers, who caught three passes for 47 yards and a touchdown. The drive ended six seconds later on a five-yard touchdown pass from Dobbs to Jauan Jennings.

“I’m definitely aware of the players on the field”, Dobbs said. The question was general – “Why are we so bad?!” – but the feeling was more specific.

“We just stayed the course and followed the course and kept playing”, Vols coach Butch Jones said.

The Hokies had nine first downs in the first quarter, Tennessee but one.

“We’ve obviously got to do a better job either teaching or understanding or emphasizing ball security”, Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente said.

The Hokies would be generous the rest of the night, so much so we can’t really say too much about Tennessee’s performance. The Vols recovered at the Hokies’ 4 and punched in an exclamation point touchdown on the next play. At one point in the fourth quarter, Tennessee scored two touchdowns in 13 seconds.

Virginia Tech: The Hokies simply must do a better job of protecting the football. And after falling by 14 in the first quarter against the Virginia Tech Hokies, the Volunteers were starting to look like bigger busts than last year’s Auburn Tigers team. “I put this all on me”.

The Vols are trying to improve to 3-0 for the first time since 2004.

Appalachian State’s near upset of Tennessee has created doubt about whether the Vols are as good as their preseason top-10 ranking.

The next time out, Virginia Tech – which totaled 330 yards, including 239 on the ground – will see another elite defense in Boston College, which is allowing 180 yards per game. Boston College (1-1) will be coming off a 26-7 victory over MA.

Ohio, a Mid-American Conference member, defeated Kansas 37-21 on Saturday following a triple-overtime loss to Texas State in the season opener.
