“Strong Cyber Monday evening sales pushed the day’s close to $3.07 billion, with stronger than expected discounts averaging 21.5%”. Now, even with broadband access, Cyber Monday continues to be a day when retailers pull out big promotions.

Target was offering 15% off on every online order on Monday, along with 30% off select clothing, shoes and toys.

Last year, retailers experienced shoppers on Black Friday crowding some stores, so they hired more security staff this year to be ready for a repeat.

Adobe also added the sales holiday seemed to show more “positive social sentiment” than Black Friday on social media.

Both Adobe and Amazon are reporting record sales, with Adobe citing a number of $3 billion.

Cyber Monday shoppers mainly went after electronics, including TVs, tablets and the Apple Watch.

Online sales for large retailers, with average revenue of $25 million, grew 15 percent on Cyber Monday compared to a year ago, while small retailers, with average revenue of $100,000, increased by 6 percent, according to data released Monday by Adobe Digital Index, of San Jose, California.

ComScore chairman, Gian Fulgoni, said: “Cyber Monday maintained its reputation as the most important online spending day of year, exceeding $3bn in total digital spending and once again becoming the heaviest online spending day of all-time”.

A Target spokeswoman said volume had been twice as high as its busiest day ever and that as the website had seen spikes in traffic so some visitors were placed in a queue.

Mobile also accounted for 34% of Black Friday sales and drove 53% of in-store shopping visits on Friday.

The holiday season is on and that means it’s time to think about presents.

Still, given sales have become much more spread out – starting in some cases a week or two before Thanksgiving – and more people are buying online, Black Friday and Cyber Monday are not the ultimate indicator of holiday season sales, says Brian Yarbrough, consumer analyst with Edward Jones.

The name “Cyber Monday” was coined in 2005 by the National Retail Federation’s online arm, called Shop.org, to encourage people to shop online.
