Record-equalling win pleases Williams

Serena Williams sped past another milestone Saturday as her 307th Grand slam match win took her past Martina Navratilova s record and into the fourth round of the US Open. “Like a really powerful, strong character that is strong, but yet isn’t afraid to be soft at the same time”.

But she wilted under the raw power of Williams, who forced her into 32 errors and was gifted with 26 unforced miscues in the 78-minute match.

Williams reached 121 miles per hour on a serve. She has only ever failed to make it past the first weekend of the the tournament once in her career. She’s serving pretty well both serves, playing aggressive on the return.

“Each number I’m definitely most proud of”. No need to take her word – or her coach’s – for it. “Today, my opponent tried to play aggressively, but I played that game just a little bit better than her”.

“There is no pain”. I don’t know; I’m not in her shoulder. Obviously I’m excited about that.

“It was a long time ago”, she said. In 2015 she made two quarterfinals and this year reached the semis at Wimbledon while working her way back up to No. 6 in the WTA rankings. “I know it’s under control now”.

With her superhero sleeves and dominating performances, Williams may not be helpful to the other women in her draw when she is on court.

That victory proved a landmark as it marked her 306th win at a Grand Slam tournament.

She’ll face Yaroslava Shvedova on Monday in the Round of 16.

“It’s just a lot of willpower”, Williams said.

“And what better place to do it than here where it all started”, said Williams, who claimed the first of her 22 Grand Slam singles titles at the 1999 US Open.

Serena and Venus have been pictured preparing for their respective US Open fourth round matches side by side at Flushing Meadows. At 36, she was the oldest woman in the field.

It took three sets for Simona Halep to advance to the fourth round.

Babos was then in the box seat, earning a 3-1 lead before Halep rallied for a 4-3 turnaround and an eventual spot in the next round. It all ended just a few points later when Babos double-faulted on match point.

After the match, Halep said she wasn’t able to move well because of a back problem.

Many of Murray’s troubles against Paolo Lorenzi were of his own making as he allowed the energetic Italian journeyman to make him look ordinary through two sets before pulling himself together to win 7-6 (7/4), 5-7, 6-2, 6-3.

To that end, Larsson covered an average of 5.2 feet per point, while Serena was at 4.2 feet as she dictated the action throughout.
