Record flooding prompts evacuations in Texas

If the river does rise as high as predicted, it would be the fourth highest flood on record along the Brazos River in Parker County and the worst since 1990. Emergency operations include aircraft, canine search teams, heavy-ground equipment, swift-water rescue watercraft and search personnel. The Army did not release the names of the dead because it was still notifying relatives.

In central Texas, three soldiers died, three were rescued and six were missing at Ft. The accident happened in an area near Cold Springs and Owl Creek, Fort Hood said in a statement.

He said the National Weather Service is calling for significant rainfall locally through the weekend.

Many areas have already received heavy rainfall over the last week and additional rainfall is likely to cause flooding.

Evacuations were ordered for parts of two towns in Fort Bend County, about 30 miles (50 kms) southwest of Houston, where the Brazos River has risen to levels not seen for more than a century.

The National Weather Service in Fort Worth has issued a flash flood watch through 7 a.m. Thursday for much of North Texas, including Denton County. Officials say levels in the Brazos have not dropped much and additional rainfall could make the flooding worse.

Storms are hitting North Texas Tuesday afternoon – and heavy rain is in the forecast all week.

Emergency officials continue to conduct rescue operations for an overturned Light Medium Tactical Vehicle at the Owl Creek Tactical low-water crossing and East Range Road.

“Our hydrologists are trying to put off opening a third gate [at the Morris Sheppard Dam] for as long as possible to allow some of that localized flooding to go down”, BRA spokeswoman Judi Pierce said. The Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office is urging residents not to return to their homes.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott declared a state of disaster in 31 counties due to the flooding. Some areas now overwhelmed by water had run dry two years ago due to drought conditions.

The Austin area is expected to receive 3 to 6 inches through Friday, while northern Texas, including Dallas, is forecast to receive 3 to 5 inches by the end of today.

Travel has become almost impossible in some areas of Texas as substantial rain and rising rivers have led to widespread flooding over the past week.
