Former AC Milan, Chelsea and Dynamo Kiev striker Shevchenko was part of Fomenko’s coaching staff at the tournament but has now been given the reins ahead of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup.
Fomenko’s side were one of the poorest to watch at the summer’s UEFA European Championship, as they were eliminated at the group stage of the competition having lost all of their matches and failing to score a goal.
With AC Milan he won the Champions League in 2003 after a penalty shoot out win over Juventus, and clinched Serie A in 2004, when he was named European footballer of the year.
“The coaching staff will include Italians Mauro Tassotti and Andrea Maldera, known for work in the structure of (AC) Milan, and Spaniard Raul Riancho, who from 2014 to 2016 worked as assistant coach at Dynamo Kiev”.
Shevchenko, who played for Dyanmo Kiev, AC Milan and Chelsea during his playing career, had been up for the role of manager in November 2012, but declined the invitation to take charge at that time.
