“A few exceptionally talented men and women will become the astronauts chosen in this group who will once again launch to space from USA soil on American-made spacecraft”.

More than 300 people have been hired as NASA astronauts since the USA space agency’s first corps of seven was selected in 1959 as part of Project Mercury, which sent men into orbit around the Earth.

Both the Starliner and Crew Dragon are in development aided by NASA’s commercial crew program to bring four astronauts to the space station at a time. With the declining number of space missions, the size of NASA’s astronaut corps today is a third its size in 2000. Two, he stayed at the International Space Station (ISS) along with another colleague.

Plenty of us normal humans have the basic qualifications for astronaut training.

The chance to talk to astronauts presently living aboard the International Space Station is a rare learning opportunity: Schools and educational institutions all over the world apply for the privilege, and must submit a detailed proposal to NASA up to a year in advance seeking contact. Scott’s identical twin brother Mark, himself a former astronaut, is spending the year on Earth, enabling researchers to focus on a near-identical comparison of the brothers’ genomics and omics profiles, something never captured before in human space research.

The space agency actually has a maximum of 14 vacant slots, which means it would need to whittle the applicants and eventually say “thank you” to 18,286 astronaut hopefuls. NASA said it will announce its selections in mid-2017. They must also have a bachelor’s degree with a major study in an appropriate field of engineering, biological science, physical science, or mathematics.

Astronaut Mike Hopkins, Expedition 38 Flight Engineer, is shown in this handout photo provided by NASA as he participates in the second of two spacewalks which took place on December 24, 2013. Moreover, NASA has been successful in connecting with more people through social media these past few years.

Preparing for a three-year journey to Mars requires innovative thinking, which is why NASA involved the best and brightest investigators from the US and the International Space Station partner space agencies.

The board will then invite probably the most extremely certified candidates to the company’s Johnson Space Center in Houston for interviews earlier than the ultimate choice is made and the brand new astronaut candidates report back to Johnson for coaching.
