“This plane just dropped out of the sky, veered and crashed into the apartment building”, Porter said. It appeared no one on the ground in the Ellet neighborhood where the crash occurred was injured or killed.
The plane’s owner, Danny Lewkowicz said there were nine people on board but the number of deaths has yet to be confirmed by the Summit County Coroner’s Office.
A Hawker H25 business jet crashed into a small apartment complex Tuesday in southeast Akron, Ohio.
As many as nine people were feared dead Tuesday after a small private jet crashed into an apartment building in the midwestern USA city of Akron, local media reported, citing the plane s owner.
The jet took off from Dayton and planned to land at Akron Fulton global Airport, about 2 miles from where it crashed.
Police said neighbors reported hearing a “loud explosion”.
The national Transportation Safety Board will lead an investigation into the crash. According to the patrol, two people were believed to have been aboard and crews at the scene are not sure whether there were any passengers.
Akron-based utility FirstEnergy Corp FE.N said the crash caused a power outage for 1,500 customers around the airport.
It then hit an embankment, causing a neighbouring house to catch fire. In a statement, the Ohio State Highway Patrol later clarified that the plane struck a four-family apartment complex.
A spokeswoman for the Akron fire department says authorities have confirmed two fatalities but they are still trying to determine how many people were on board. There were no known injuries on the ground, he said.
“Definitely it could have been a lot worse”, said Haymaker.
