Red Cross sends volunteers to Baton Rouge

Of the 47,000 volunteers going down to help, three are from the Erie area.

The Red Cross will have training sessions all week to prepare people to head to Louisiana or any other disaster that may come up in the future.

Putney says it’s heartbreaking to know some people in Louisiana have dealt with this type of severe flooding a couple of times.

On Monday, the sun shined bright in Baton Rouge as it highlighted the damage. Small said, “They are really in dire need, and my heart just goes out to them because I’m here and they’re there and I’d love to be able to do so much for them”. The historic flooding there has killed at least seven people and destroyed thousands of homes. Flooding is also threatening communities in MS, where Red Cross volunteers provided safe refuge to almost 70 people Saturday night. He said he’s helped those affected by Hurricane Sandy and some other small disasters. “We have mental health counselor volunteers that are in our shelters helping people deal with their loss”.

The deployment considered a Level 7 event and will cost the Red Cross more than $10 million.

Swift told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Louisiana residents graciously welcomed her when she kicked off the USA dates of her “1989 World Tour” in the state a year ago.

The Red Cross is also working closely with the entire response community to coordinate relief efforts and deliver help quickly and efficiently, keeping in mind the diverse needs of the community.

According to a news release from the Red Cross, the organization housed more than 10,000 people in at least 50 shelters Sunday night.
