Red faces as wrong anthem played before Copa America match

Marquez’s close-range shot in the 84th minute broke a 1-1 tie and Herrera’s header from just outside the net produced a goal in extra time.

Just four minutes in, Mexico would collect the ball on the left-hand side and play a risky ball into the box which found its way into the back of the net. Uruguay came out guns blazing and really put Mexico on their heels, and in the 73rd minute, Andres Guardado also gained his second yellow of the game after a foolish foul.

The head of Uruguay’s football association, Wilmar Valdez, says it was a mistake to play the Centenary Copa America in the United States and that the tournament had been arranged to favour Mexico, who beat Uruguay 3-1 in their opening game.

By that stage Jamaica were already trailing 1-0 after a sloppy clearance from Michael Hector gifted possession to Venezuela around 30 yards from goal.

The Reggae Boyz were reduced to 10-players in the 23rd minutes, after captain and hard-hitting midfielder Rodolph Austin was shown a straight red card for a bad studs-up challenge on Venezuela’s Tomas Rincon.

Guardado and Uruguay’s Matius Vecino drew red cards and will have to sit out a match.

Copa America officials were left embarrassed on Sunday evening after the Chile anthem was played by mistake as Uruguayan players lined up for their national anthem.

Copa America Centenario hasn’t exactly gotten off to the most electric of starts.

While the midfield was congested, the flanks were full of space, and the one constant throughout the game was Mexico’s ability to attack through those areas.

Mexico returns to action on Thursday when they face Jamaica at the Rose Bowl while Uruguay takes on Venezuela at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

Just a minute later, off the ensuring free kick, Diego Godin, who can make a claim as the best center back in the world at the moment, connected with the Carlos Sanchez spot kick and sent the ball careening powerfully into the net for a goal. Despite losing the key striker like Saurez Uruguay is expected to win this match by 2-1.

The win puts Mexico firmly in control of Group C with matches against Jamaica and Venezuela still remaining.

Mexico scored the opener in three minutes. And because this match just couldn’t be normal, the goal scorer was both the oldest player on the pitch and a centerback. Oh, and don’t forget, Mexico captured the Gold Cup in a 3-2 win over rival USA.
