Red Sox acquire Brad Ziegler to strengthen depleted bullpen

While that was the truth – Kimbrel, 28, will undergo surgery on Monday to fix a medial meniscus tear in his left knee and is expected to be out 3-6 weeks – one had nothing to do with the other, president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said Saturday afternoon.

He’s expected to have surgery Monday for a medial meniscus tear.

Red Sox: RHP Rick Porcello (10-2, 3.82 ERA) will make his 18th start of the season on Saturday.

“I think that’s the one thing Dave has proven over the course of his career, the proactive-ness or recognizing what our current needs are and being able to anticipate what we’ll need when we go forward”, Farrell said. He has a better ERA than Kimbrel (2.82), and his sidewinding action will be tough for American League players who have not seen him this year.

Porcello allowed a single run in the top of the 1st when he gave up a solo home run to Miller.

Admittedly, I didn’t like the Red Sox getting rid of Basabe.

On Friday, the Red Sox announced they had acquired reliever Brad Ziegler from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for two minor-league players. He held the Red Sox scoreless on three hits over seven innings in his last start against them, at home on June 29.

Said manager John Farrell: “He felt some discomfort when he came off the field”. Jose Almonte is a 20-year-old, now starting in A-ball for the Red Sox farm system.

It was the 10th homer of the season for Bogaerts, who has now reached base in 20 consecutive games, while Pedroia has had at least one hit in 12 of his last 13 games.

The sidearming 36-year-old gives the Red Sox three relievers with closing experience and could be insurance if Kimbrel’s knee soreness develops into a more significant injury.

“It’s something we’ve been looking to do, try to add to our bullpen for an extended period”, Dombrowski said.

Brad Ziegler joins the Red Sox at a very intriguing time, as in the last 32 hours Dombrowski has successfully pulled off 3 trades, all with a very specific objective in mind.

Bogaerts one-upped Miller, walloping Moore’s 0-2 heater over the Monster entirely for a two-run blast in the fourth, which flipped the one-run advantage to the Red Sox.

Rays’ manager Kevin Cash agreed: “We have to find a way to get those shutdown innings”. Ramirez was out of the lineup after fouling a ball off his left shin twice in the last few days. Blake Swihart and Chris Young are on the DL, Hanley Ramirez and Travis Shaw are day to day and Brock Holt and Junichi Tazawa are expected to miss the rest of the weekend. He is 7-0 in eight starts at Fenway Park this season.

President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski has been busy this week, acquiring veteran infielder Aaron Hill from the Milwaukee Brewers and utility man Michael Martinez from the Cleveland Indians.
