To acquire Abad, they were forced to cough up a former first-round pick in Light, who has spent most of the season in Pawtucket.

He hasn’t pitched quite as well lately, but Ryan’s replacement, interim GM Rob Antony, still was able to flip Abad in a trade with the Red Sox. On the season, the southpaw has made 39 appearances, all out of the bullpen, while posting a 2.65 ERA, the second-best mark of his career; he had a 1.57 ERA in 2014 with the Athletics.

Abad, who signed a one-year deal with Minnesota before the season, will be under the Red Sox’s control for the next two seasons and will be eligible for arbitration in 2017. He will join southpaws Tommy Layne and Robbie Ross Jr.as lefties in the Red Sox’ bullpen. Lifetime, he’s 6-24 with a 3.58 ERA. Twins officials said he will report to Triple-A Rochetster, and Jose Berrios has been recalled to start at Cleveland Monday night.

Light has a 2.32 ERA in Triple-A this season in 31 innings of work.

Light made two appearances for the Red Sox earlier this season and allowed eight runs in 2 2/3 innings.

Light was selected in the 28th round of the 2009 MLB Draft, but opted to enroll at Monmouth University, where registered a school-record 102 strikeouts in 2012 and wound up going 37th overall to Boston in that year’s draft.
