The active Oakland Athletics traded right-hander Ryan Cook to the Boston Red Sox on Friday for a player to be named or cash.

Manager John Farrell advised correspondents that this Sox are “looking to use on the possibilities to produce a bounceback and also just how that would make use of the straight into the remodeling regarding a bullpen for next year”. Melvin said he expects Doubront to join the team on Saturday.

Cook spent the last four seasons with the Athletics after getting his start with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

“This is a guy that’s been a closer in the past”, Farrell said. “Again, I know that there’s been some change of role out in Oakland and as we did with Jean Machi to come in and take a look at him”.

Cook’s best season came in 2012 when he notched 12 saves for Oakland and was their representative at the All-Star game. He was with Oakland from April 26 to May 2 and went 0-2 with a 10.38 ERA. “He’s been really great for our benefit the past 3 (three) years”. He’s a nice low-cost gamble for the Red Sox. If he manages to return to the level that once made him one of the league’s top relievers, this deal become a steal for the Red Sox. Napoli, in particular, is a candidate to be traded because he’s nearly certain to pass through waivers by virtue of the fact that he’s owed approximately $6 million for the remainder of the season.
