The Mariners defeated the Red Sox 3-1 on Wednesday night to hand Rick Porcello his first loss since May.

David Ortiz may one day go into the Hall of Fame as a member of the Red Sox, but his career started with the Mariners in 1992. Sandy Leon then grounded out to second to end the game.
Craig Kimbrel and Brad Ziegler were the stars of that effort, as Kimbrel got the Red Sox out of a jam in the ninth and struck out the side in the 10th, while Ziegler entered in the 11th to earn the save. Abad had just given up a three-run homer to the Mariners second baseman to lose the game on Tuesday night, so Farrell ostensibly didn’t trust Abad – again, a lefty specialist – enough to give him a second chance at getting that out.
“Well, they’ve hit me pretty well in the past”, Iwakuma said, “but last time I faced them in Boston, I had a good idea of what I wanted to do then”.
Cruz, Zunino and Lind homered in the third, sixth and seventh innings, respectively, while Seattle starter Hisashi Iwakuma threw 7 1/3 shutout innings.
But all that good feeling ended quickly in the second inning when Shaw led off with a solo homer to right field.
With the win, the Red Sox vaulted back past the Tigers and into the second wild-card spot. Bartolo Colon went six and two thirds scoreless innings for the victory, scattering six hits, and made the record books, too.
Miranda, 27, will make his starting debut after pitching two innings of relief in his only other major league appearance, with the Baltimore Orioles at Safeco Field on July 3. He has 25 home runs, 87 RBIs, a.398 on-base percentage and the admiration of players across the game. The third out had Mariners’ fans holding their breath as Xander Bogaerts’ long fly ball to left field was caught at the warning track by Norichika Aoki.
Diaz gave up a one-out single to Jackie Bradley Jr. before hitting Aaron Hill with a pitch.
In 17 starts for the Padres, Pomeranz allowed eight home runs and posted a 2.47 ERA, yet he’s already allowed five homers in his four starts for the Red Sox. In the bottom of the ninth, O’Malley singled with one out off reliever Fernando Abad and Franklin Gutierrez drew a walk, bringing Robinson Cano to the plate. “Travis with a big at-bat to lead things off there and then Sandy laid down a flawless bunt, so good team baseball in the last inning for us”.
But he had arguably his most dominant performance of the 2016 season here against the Mariners with the game tied 2-2.
El Paso cut the deficit to 16-15 behind two-run homers by Hector Sanchez and Manuel Margot.
The victor of the Golden Spikes Award in 2015 during his playing career at the University of Arkansas, Benintendi, who was the seventh overall pick in the 2015 MLB Draft by the Boston Red Sox, has rapidly ascended to an everyday big league role. Darren and sandy with a nice spot behind you getting over his second base with a sacrifice gave brought the chance to get through and that’s a a ideal small ball and it kind of always drawn up. Pujols also finished with three hits. It was a blast, and it was great to see, because with the way Porcello continued to pitch, it looked like the Mariners were going to need the best of Iwakuma to escape with the win.

Travis Shaw started at first base in Ramirez’s place on Wednesday, and Farrell said at this point the team doesn’t believe Ramirez is a candidate for the disabled list.
