Red Sox: Henry Owens to Make Major League Baseball Debut Against Yankees

The Yankees also had to launch a new era, and get fans excited following the last of the old guard retirements, Derek Jeter’s farewell.

Henry Owens was acceptable in his first Major League start, but the Boston Red Sox couldn’t keep up with him as they lost to the New York Yankees 13-3.

Robbie Ross Jr., Jean Machi, Craig Breslow, and Alexi Ogando were responsible for the carnage, allowing eight hits and four walks in three innings.

In a 13-3 drubbing by the New York Yankees, Owens at least offered some hope for the future. No surprise there, as it was the Yankee’s 11th win in their last 15 games played.

“I don’t think anybody was expecting it”, Betances said. After McCann’s home run, the Yankees scored twice on an RBI double by Headley and a run-scoring single by Ellsbury. “Everybody’s a threat right now”.

Teixeira singled to drive in Young, McCann doubled to drive in Rodriguez, and Beltran had an RBI ground out.

Both of those baserunners came around to score – part of a parade of Yankees crossing the plate over the final three innings – and Owens was lefting owning the loss. The Boston bullpen was pounded for 10 runs, including nine in the seventh inning.

McCann hit his 18th homer and drove in four runs.

By blowing a late one-run lead and falling to the Tampa Bay Ray on Sunday, the Red Sox saw their three-game winning streak snapped and dropped into a tie for the worst record in the American League.

Owens promptly retired the next two batters with relative alacrity, and appeared to settle in after slogging through the first inning with a pitch count already above 30.

“I thought we had a dynamic offense as long as we stayed healthy, and thankfully it’s been that way, and hopefully it stays that way”, Cashman said Tuesday.

Ellsbury scored on an Alex Rodriguez single, leaving two men on base for the ensuing monster three-run homer by Brian McCann to put the Yankees up 8-3.

“I looked around while I was warming up and kind of “here I am” so I tried to embrace and have fun at the same time”, Owens said, insisting he wasn’t nervous. Yankees 1, Red Sox 0.

Wright won his only appearance against New York this year, permitting two runs over five innings of relief in a 6-5, 19-inning road victory on April 10.

Second baseman Dustin Pedroia (hamstring) is still going through daily treatment and should ramp up physical activity this weekend. Red Sox CF Mookie Betts (concussion) increased his physical activity Monday and did not feel any symptoms…. The move came five days after New York got him in a trade with Seattle.
