Red Sox Hire Dave Dombrowski As President Of Baseball Operations

It’ll be fascinating to see how Dombrowski spends Henry’s money.

Dombrowski and Wren won a World Series in Miami in 1997 and then were entrusted to run one of baseball’s all-time great fire sales following the title.

It was also announced that general manager Ben Cherington was stepping down but will assist Dombrowski, recently let go by the Detroit Tigers and quickly hired in Boston.

Since then, the Red Sox have gone on to win three World Series, while Dombrowski took over one of the worst teams in the history of baseball and turned them into a playoff contender.

– Dombrowski constructed Florida’s 1997 World Championship team by signing key free agents Al Leiter, Kevin Brown, Livan Hernandez, Bobby Bonilla and Moises Alou in the seasons leading up to their title run. His mentality in recent years in Detroit was to be in a win-now mode. Dombrowski was out. He was working out with bands attached to a door, which flew open and caused him to fall backward and hit the back of his head.

The Red Sox will hold a press conference Wednesday afternoon to officially introduce Dombrowski, who expects to get down to work right away.

Clearly, it went well.

“We realized that our baseball views were in fact going to be in sync, that Dave intends to balance scouting, data analytics, player make-up, and all the tools in his toolbox”, Henry said.

Speaking to reporters a day after a mid-game shakeup that left general manager Ben Cherington on the outs, Dombrowski said he would be hiring a general manager but was in no rush.

Rookie first baseman Travis Shaw had four hits, second baseman Brock Holt three, DH David Ortiz picked up a pair of doubles as the Red Sox, who had 45 runs on 60 hits in three games over the weekend before being stopped by Danny Salazar on Monday, came through again. “As owners, we are ultimately responsible for the poor results we’ve had over the last two years and results going forward”. Dombrowski must be thrilled to be inheriting a roster with Xander Bogaerts, Mookie Betts and Blake Swihart up the middle for years to come. It’s just as obvious to him as it is to everybody else that the Sox needed major changes on the mound in order to compete.

But there was simply no passing up this opportunity. You look at the fan support that is here.

Easy, given Cherington’s commitment to leaving the Red Sox in the strongest possible position.

Cherington leaves the team as general manager after taking over the post left by Theo Epstein in October of 2011. Dombrowski, who was fired by the Tigers on August 4, said Henry called him shortly thereafter. That might sting, but Dombrowski also has a reputation as an excellent talent evaluator, knowing which guys are expendable and which are worth holding onto. “They have a lot of good people here”.

“It’s important to me to make a contribution, absolutely”. Give me the Indians at a great price. “I met him there”, Francona said.

“We want to (have success) in a way that we sustain that and you try to do in right fashion where year and year out, you can (compete)”, he said.
