The Angels are looking for a general manager but had not been considered serious players for Dombrowski.

Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington was also confirmed to be stepping down although he would assist Dombrowski during a transitional period. “I look forward to being his partner in that process, looking through the the resources at all levels of the organization and figuring out how he wants to structure things”. He was surprised. “We realized that our baseball views were in fact going to be in sync”, Henry said. I understand it would be a transition with him. Hopefully, we get to see that pitcher soon. The new GM will be hired by Dombrowski. Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported that Frank Wren, the former Braves GM, is the “leading contender” to be the GM under Dombrowski. He was fired by the Tigers on August 4.

And as they grapple back toward relevance, the Boston Red Sox just landed themselves a proven, promising new leader. One of the clubs, according to a person familiar with the talks, was the Washington Nationals. They will criticize the moves that Dombrowski did not make. Considering how disappointing Sandoval and Ramirez have been in Fenway, Red Sox nation will undoubtedly be hoping Dombrowski will use some of this trade savvy to get rid of them and right the ship before next season.

It was only weeks ago that Henry said Cherington would be the GM “for a very long time”. Give me the Indians at a great price. “And I’ve gotten to know Tom over the years”.

Farrell left Boston in 2011 to manage Toronto for two years before returning to guide the Red Sox to a 2013 World Series title.

While in Detroit, the Tigers reached the World Series in 2006 and 2012 ande made a total of five postseason appearances.

Bogaerts and Castillo homered for the Red Sox.

Red Sox chairman Tom Werner said he is disappointed but respectful of Cherington’s decision to resign. Ben’s steady hand was at the tiller of that remarkable journey. “We have a history of success over the past 14 years, characterized by a certain boldness of goal”.

Yes, Boston fans are always going to be impatient for the next victor, and finishing last two of the last three years (and probably again this season) hasn’t sat well with them.

“One of the advantages of joining the team now is that I get the opportunity to get a head start on the important job of roster construction for 2016”, Dombrowski said in a statement. Johnson went on to win 303 games in his 22-year career. The Red Sox are the fifth major league team that Dombrowski has worked for.

[Terry Francona says he will accompany John Farrell to first chemotherapy treatment]. “We became friends not just in baseball but outside of baseball”. While Dombrowski has yet to put his fingerprints on the club, and while all of the snap judgments are just that, Dustin Pedroia put it well during his postgame media session minutes after finding out: “Wherever he’s been, he’s won”. He was gone with two outs in the second inning as the Red Sox strolled to a 9-1 victory over the Indians. It’ll be fascinating to see who comes with him from Detroit, and who leaves from Boston.
