Speaking before the Red Sox visited the Yankees in New York on Tuesday night, Farrell said that it’s too early to say if Johnson’s injury extends to his ulnar collateral ligament, which would likely end his season. “Coming out of spring training, there was some work needed with just commanding his body, as well as the baseball, and that’s been the case over the last four weeks or more”.

On Tuesday, he’s scheduled to make his major-league debut for the Boston Red Sox starting on the mound against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium.

After taking a line drive to the face and almost losing his eyesight during his first appearance there during the Futures at Fenway game in 2012, Johnson was expected to return to Fenway as a major league pitcher for the Red Sox at some point this year.

With Rick Porcello being sent to the 15-day disabled list with a tricep strain, the Red Sox have called up Henry Owens from AAA Pawtucket. Boston had optioned right-hander Ryan Cook to Triple-A Pawtucket on Monday.

“I had been sore leading up to that and I knew I was going to be limited”, he said.

“We feel like it’s a short-term thing”, Farrell added. He was pitching for the Athletics’ Triple-A affiliate. Travis Shaw again played third base.
