The Sox finished a three-game trampling of the lifeless Arizona Diamondbacks yesterday with an overpowering 16-2 win.
Betts has already recorded a three home runs in a game this season, doing so against the Baltimore Orioles on May 31. The Red Sox have some work to do in the remainder of this season and it is no question that Betts will play a major role in how successful the Sox are. He now has 26 homers – tied with David Ortiz for the team lead – and 84 RBIs.
Jackie Bradley Jr. chipped in with a two-run homer for the Red Sox, who closed a six-game homestand at 4-2.
Arizona Diamondbacks’ Adam Loewen (58) winds up for a pitch in the fifth inning of a baseball game against the Boston Red Sox, Sunday, Aug. 14, 2016, in Boston. It is never a good thing to assume a player will just fill the shoes of a Hall of Fame bat like Oritz, but Mookie Betts has that potential.
The Sox improved to 13-0 with Porcello on the mound at Fenway Park this year.
Porcello allowed one run on three hits over seven innings and became the first Boston pitcher since Dave “Boo” Ferriss to begin a year by winning his first 12 decisions in Fenway. “Got off to a big lead, and I didn’t want to mess it up”. Vogelsong, who missed nearly 2 1/2 months of the season after being hit in the face by a pitch May 23, has been exceptional in two starts since his return. He lowered his ERA to 3.30.
Wins and losses aren’t the best stat to use in Cy Young debates, but it’s hard to ignore Porcello’s MLB-leading 16 victories. “We’ve got that much confidence in him”.
Greinke was tagged for nine runs and three homers – two of Mookie Betts’ three in the game – in 1 2/3 innings as the Boston Red Sox completed a three-game sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks with a 16-2 rout Sunday.
Boston bested its previous season high of 15 runs against Minnesota on June 11.
First baseman Hanley Ramirez will miss at least the next three games after being placed on the bereavement list.
– Zack Greinke entered Sunday with a 2-4 record and a 2.81 ERA in 41 and 1/3 innings in his career against the Red Sox. He’s batting.270 on the season with 16 home runs and 70 RBI. Arizona used seven pitchers in the blowout, including former Franklin Pierce lefty Steve Hathaway, who pitched a ideal sixth, getting Betts to fly out to end it.
Boston scored two runs in the first inning and seven in the second.
“They told me try and swing for it”, Betts said. RHP Clay Buchholz will start Thursday at Detroit.
Reliever Roenis Elias was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket after the game.
