Red Sox’s Rick Porcello: Suffers first loss

Red Sox coaches had to restrain David Ortiz after his outburst following a ninth-inning strikeout with the bases loaded in a game the Yankees went on to win, 3-2.

In fact, the May 6, Friday night game will be the first time that a first-place Boston Red Sox team has faced a last-place New York Yankees club after more than one game into the season since September 22, 1990.

The New York Yankees hope to find some run support for their pitcher when they host the Boston Red Sox at 7PM ET.

With that set-up, we take you to the top of the ninth in the Bronx, with Andrew Miller throwing nasty stuff for the Bombers, David Ortiz trying to drive in the tying run, and, to fill out the picture, plate umpire Ron Kulpa in the last stages of submitting a stupendously bad night of ball-and-strike calling.

The teams combined to strand 21 runners and draw 16 walks.

Ortiz and manager John Farrell were both ejected by Kulpa during the inning.

The 3-and-1 pitch broke low and away from Ortiz and carried catcher Brian McCann’s mitt nearly to the dirt.

Farrell, who later admitted the umpires told him to exit, likely will be fined and possibly face punishment for not leaving the dugout. “He’d need a hockey stick for the 3-2 pitch”. Ramirez would hit his home run to open up the third inning, the third of the season and second of the series.

“I don’t know”, Miller said. O’Sullivan has a 3.00 ERA in five starts for Pawtucket this season.

Travis Shaw launched a fifth-inning two-run homer off Eovaldi, and the Red Sox finished off their sweep with their second straight eight-run, 14-hit game in this series.

But Buchholz walked only two, and Boston ended Chicago’s three-game winning streak despite first baseman Hanley Ramirez being a late scratch with an illness.

The last-place Yankees played soundly in the latest matchup, and Eovaldi will try to help them to a series win over Price and the visiting Red Sox on Saturday.

“The vibe is up awesome up here so I’m just glad to be back up and just be part of the team and help them win”, Carroll said.

Another was the mounting frustration that overtook Michael Pineda in the sixth when two balls fell for hits in center in front of Hicks. It would be a sign of things to come for Johnson, the 2015 International League pitcher of the year. Miller struck out Ortiz on the next pitch and the designated hitter returned from the dugout and started yelling at Kulpa before getting tossed.

If anyone thought that the 40-year old slugger would start to slow down in his final season, they were sadly mistaken. There were no happy emotions for him after this one.

“That was a momentum shift for us”, Boston manager John Farrell said. Red 7-3. Robbie Ross Jr. came into the game since it no longer was a save situation.

Kirby Yates (1-0) wound up with the win.

Earlier, there was – finally – an enormous hit from Aaron Hicks, who homered off Rick Porcello in the seventh to snap a 2-2 tie, a sweet moment for a guy hitting. 088 with no extra-base hits and two RBIs in 34 at-bats when he sent a hanging changeup over the Yankees bullpen and into the right-field bleachers.

NY had lost seven of its previous eight games. The Yankees were sinking badly.
