On a night full of firsts for the Carolina Hurricanes, the team banded together and captured their first win of the season, and their first October win since 2013.

It didn’t take long for Carolina to take the lead, as McGinn scored just 55 seconds into his first game. Carolina, meanwhile, has scored five goals in its 0-3-0 start after Tuesday’s 4-1 loss to Florida.
Jimmy Howard gets the start in goal, marking the first time in the young season that the Red Wings go with the same goalie for consecutive games.
On the powerplay, great puck movement led to a lovely pass from Staal from under the goal line out front to an undetected Faulk streaking through the slot, and he made no mistake, giving Carolina a 2-0 lead. Staal and Versteeg each also claimed two assists, with Gustav Nyquist, Riley Sheahan and Teemu Pulkkinen netting Detroit’s consolation strikes.
After an emotional Opening Night win over their former coach Mike Babcock and his Maple Leafs, the team – to a man, it seemed – had trouble getting anything going for two periods against the Hurricanes on the road the next night. Marchenko also played 51 regular-season games for the Griffins, notching 20 points (3-17-20) and a plus-22 rating.
Four games into the season, Abdelkader leads the Wings with four goals.
The Canes got a good bounce to make it 5-2 in the third period, and it was Chris Terry who was the recipient of the goal.
With Hurricanes rookie defenseman Noah Hanifin in the penalty box for hooking early in the third, the Red Wings had a chance to convert on the power play, but were unable to as Carolina went a clean 2-for-2 on the penalty kill. “Obviously, we want him to get well, but again I don’t know what that means, I don’t know what the future holds with that”.
“They’re a team that’s trying to put as many pucks on net as possible”, Nyquist said.
The Red Wings are one of six remaining undefeated teams in the National Hockey League entering play Thursday, and Howard has been a big reason why the Winged Wheel remains unblemished after three games.

“You have to skate and win puck battles and puck races and play from the right side of the puck and we didn’t do a good enough job of that tonight”. The Hurricanes tacked on two more goals before the Red Wings got on the board.
