Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco has season-ending hip surgery

Cincinnati Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco again underwent surgery Monday morning – his second in three months.

Mesoraco played in only 16 games this year and 23 in 2015. He will have undergone surgeries on each of his hips and one of his shoulders.

The former first-round draft pick had one of the best seasons by a Reds catcher in 2014, hitting 25 homers and driving in 80 runs. The surgery was performed by the team’s medical director, Dr. Timothy Kremchek. The former All-Star had surgery on his left hip previous year and needed surgery early this season for a torn labrum in his left shoulder. The Reds knew at some point Mesoraco would need the left hip fixed.

Then when Mesoraco suffered the shoulder injury, they made a decision to do the surgery when he had recovered enough to handle crutches.

Kremchek said Mesoraco will have more range of motion after the latest hip surgery. “I’m optimistic this is really going to make him a better catcher, a better athlete and be less stressful on his body”, said Kremchek. The Reds think he could be ready for opening day, barring setbacks. Beyond that, the Reds have the recently demoted John Lamb in Triple-A as well as top prospects Robert Stephenson and Amir Garrett as options in the near future.

Price said they would not rush Homer Bailey back from the disabled list to make that start.

Moscot was initially placed on the minor-league disabled list on July 5 with an elbow problem, although the organization believed it to be minor at the time.
