Reds’ offense struggles again as they lose to Cardinals 3

CINCINNATI (AP) – Matt Carpenter tied it with a solo homer in the eighth, and Randal Grichuk connected in the 13th inning, rallying the St. Louis Cardinals to a 4-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday night. The home run would be the winning run in the game, as the Cardinals won the game 4-3. They have the best record in the major leagues at 69-39. “Regardless of age and experience, we need to teach our young starters one of their big responsibilities is keeping themselves in the game”.

They took two of three in Cincinnati and have won 15 of their last 18 series together.

DIAMONDBACKS 11, NATIONALS 4: Washington reliever Aaron Barrett threw away a bunt in the sixth inning and Arizona quickly broke away, handing the Nationals their fifth loss in six games.

Anthony DeSclafani handled the St. Louis Cardinals for the second straight start, striking out a career-high nine, and the Cincinnati Reds turned a big first inning off John Lackey into a 3-2 victory Tuesday night.

The Cardinals are 4-1 in Wacha’s last five starts versus the Reds and 10-2 in his last 12 road starts. Cincinnati has had 19 rain delays this season, including 13 at home, totaling 24 hours and 40 minutes with three postponements and one suspension…. Trevor Rosenthal worked around a single and a walk for his 32nd save.

Honorable Mentions are due to: Eugenio Suarez, who had 2 of the other 4 Reds hits on the afternoon (both singles); Michael Lorenzen, who pitched decently despite the delayed start, but was bitten by a few 2-out hits with runners on in vintage Reds-vs-Cards fashion; and the combo of Burke Badenhop, Pedro Villarreal, and Dylan Axelrod, who combined to toss 4 scoreless innings from the pen. “My foot was sliding a little bit, so between innings I had them put (some drying compound) on the mound”.

Despaigne allowed seven runs on nine hits with three walks and a strikeout in five innings.

Archer struck out seven and yielded just one run on a solo homer by Chicago third baseman Tyler Saladino in the third for the win, but Sale was roughed up for seven runs in just 5-1/3 innings.

Hamilton initially misjudged Jason Heyward’s fly to center in the eighth, but made a stretching, over-the-shoulder catch and slid on his stomach on the warning track to make up for his late break on the ball. “(2) – For those doubting Thomas” at the beginning of the season, when Cardinals “Ace” Adam Wainwright went down with his Achilles injury, of doom and gloom for St. Louis, this is for you.

Vegas betting expert Steve Fezzik doesn’t expect the bad situation in Oakland to get much better this season. The Reds’ streak of 18 innings without a run matches their longest of the season – they also did it in June…. Wacha has given up only two runs in 20 1-3 innings against the Reds this season. The lefty has converted 56 consecutive save opportunities at Great American Ball Park since his last failure in September 2012.

If there is rain in the forecast, and St. Louis Cardinals Michael Wacha is to start, rest assured there will be a weather delay.
