The San Francisco Giants have acquired outfielder Marlon Byrd and cash from the Cincinnati Reds for minor league reliever Stephen Johnson. Regular center fielder Angel Pagan also is on the 15-day disabled list.

Norris, a left-hander, had been expected to go on the DL after he left his start Wednesday after 4 1/3 innings due to a right oblique strain. He is earning $8 million this year and has an $8 million club option for 2016 that becomes guaranteed if he has 509 at-bats this year. He and the Giants will play his former team at home in mid September.

The Reds originally traded for Byrd this off-season expecting to contend in the NL Central and it was a fairly big surprise that he wasn’t traded at the deadline. He’s going to be a good addition for us.

The Giants stand at 65-55 heading into action against the Pirates on Thursday night. “I talked to him and he’s very excited to be coming here”.

The team said it gets right handed pitcher Steve Johnson in return.

The Reds signed Byrd as a free agent during last offseason.

Bochy was thrilled to add Byrd to a Giants lineup that definitely needed to be bolstered after the loss of Pence.

Marlon Byrd will most likely make his debut in a Giants uniform on Friday against the Pirates along with Gregor Blanco and Nori Aoki in the outfield grass of PNC Park. “(Giants) have had a lot of injuries in the outfield…. He missed time with a broken left wrist after being hit by a pitch. The only difference between the two is that in order for players to be traded, they either must be sent to the one team that claimed them, or they must pass through waivers entirely unclaimed before being shipped out.
