Redskins’ Breeland expected to miss 4-6 weeks with bad knee

Breeland is expected to be out 6-8 weeks. It was not immediately known the extend of Breeland’s injury, but the reaction of his teammates indicated it was more than a slight injury. His leg gave out from under him when a receiver he was covering made a cut.

Breeland will miss the Redskins’ first regular-season game, at home against the Miami Dolphins on September 13, the league said Friday. The second-year pro is slated to start opposite Chris Culliver in the Redskins’ secondary.

As a rookie, Breeland started 15 games and recorded 67 tackles, two interceptions and two forced fumbles. “And he’s a key member of our special teams”, Washington coach Jay Gruden said after the suspension news was released – but before the practice session when Breeland injured himself.

Gruden says, “I think we got the best case scenario, probably, for what we thought”. He is eligible to participate in all offseason and preseason practices and games.

Breeland was suspended without pay for one game by the NFL on Friday, almost a full year after he was cited for marijuana possession. 11 on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond.
