Wigan Athletic have announced the signing of Reece James on a three-year deal for a fee of around £1 million as the Latics continue to build for a promotion push to return to the Championship at the first time of asking.

James’ exit from the club so soon after signing a new deal shows United have got their business heads screwed on again and they’ll be keen to avoid any situations like David de Gea where a player’s contract can run out.

Wigan, who were relegated to League One last season, are undergoing an overhaul under new manager Gary Caldwell with Scott Carson, Ali Al-Habsi, James McClean, Martyn Waghorn, Rob Kiernan and James Tavernier among those leaving. He is pleased to have accquired a player who has “been schooled by one of the best academies around” and is convinced of James’ quality as he has “impressed both at under-21 level and whilst on loan“.

However, the 21-year-old has now permanently left the club ahead of their pre-season tour, joining League One side Wigan.

New summer signing Matteo Darmian can also play the same role, having featured on the left flank for Torino.

He played against the Reds twice – in their 0-0 draw at Rotherham last December and their 1-0 defeat against Huddersfield at the City Ground in April. Waghorn, 25, joined from Leicester in January 2014 and scored eight goals in 38 league games.
