Reed delighted to seal Ryder Cup spot as Fowler’s hopes suffer setback
Eight Americans qualify automatically * Reed one of five returning from 2014 * Fowler, Watson miss out NEW YORK, Aug 28 (Reuters) – Patrick Reed clinched a spot on the American Ryder Cup team when he won The Barclays on Sunday and immediately set his sights on gaining “sweet revenge” when the US take on Europe in five weeks’ time.

Reed held off the rest of the field on the Black Course in the final round and ended the 72-hole event with a 275 (-9).
Fowler and Reed had quickly moved to 10 under for the tournament as they reached the seventh hole in the final round, with Grillo just one shot behind on the ninth.
FARSO, Denmark – Belgium’s Thomas Pieters won the Made in Denmark tournament by a stoke to improve his chances of earning a captain’s pick for the European Ryder Cup team.
Dustin Johnson, Spieth, Phil Mickelson, Jimmy Walker and Brooks Koepka already made the team. Fowler, meanwhile, will have to rely on a pick from USA team captain Davis Love III. It kept him within range of Fowler, and he re-gained the lead when Fowler bogeyed the 11th hole.
“It’s not for me to worry about right now”, Fowler said about being a captain’s pick.
Reed tried to downplay the meaning of making the Ryder Cup team, suggesting through the week that his focus was winning the tournament.
Australian Adam Scott, who shot a magnificent 65 on round three, also struggled for consistency with two bogeys and two birdies in the first eight holes of the day.
Patrick Reed has a photo taken with his daughter, Windsor-Wells Reed, 2, after he won The Barclays golf tournament in Farmingdale, N.Y., Sunday, Aug. 28, 2016. “If you go and win, it takes care of everything else”.
Its just been great to finally be able to close one off, Reed said.
The FedEx Cup playoffs feature a progressive cut through three events to determine the final 30 players to qualify for the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta in late September, with the victor of that tournament taking home $10 million.
“I’m going to get my work done”, Fowler said to Reed.
Reed, who finished at 9-under 275, wasnt the only player who felt like a big victor.
Senden did enough to move from 99 to 80 and secure a start in this week’s Deutsche Bank Championship, where he will be joined by Victorians Aaron Baddeley (56) and Marc Leishman (71).
That number will be trimmed to the top-70 in FedEx Cup points for the third event of the series, the BMW Championship in Chicago, in two weeks’ time.
PRIDDIS, Alberta (AP) – Ariya Jutanugarn ran away with the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open at chilly Priddis Greens for her LPGA Tour-leading fifth victory of the year – all in the last 10 events.
He almost bogeyed the 17th as well, sinking a six-footer for par to preserve a two-shot lead going to the last.
Fowler will hope to earn one of those wild cards, despite having failed to convert a 54-hole lead on the PGA Tour for the fourth time, the 27-year-old carding a closing 74 after dropping just one shot in his first 64 holes.

Martin Laird of Scotland had a 69 and is another stroke back on a tie for fourth with Argentinian Emiliano Grillo.
