Reed wins The Barclays, secures Ryder Cup berth

She won the Women’s British Open in the event before the Olympics, and made it two in a row on the tour Sunday in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies. Elliott had a comfortable lead before a tire problem on Michael Annett’s auto brought out the yellow flag.

“So going into today, I knew that one shot is not a lot around this golf course to make up”. Elliott remains winless, but is in solid shape to make the Chase field on points if need be.

Even so, Reed could sense another tournament slipped away.

Elliott led by 2.86 seconds with 28 laps to go Sunday, and it looked as if Larson’s chance to catch him had been derailed when he lost ground passing a lapped auto.

That’s when his caddie, brother-in-law Kessler Karain, stepped in and told him to quit worrying about it and keep hitting good shots.

Chris Buescher, who has a victory but still needs to stay in the top 30 in points to make the Chase, finished 35th after some early engine trouble.

“Everyones been talking about the Ryder Cup, been talking about, ‘Oh, youre in the eighth spot and youre on the bubble and all that, ” Reed said”.

Rickie Fowler tees off from the third hole during the final round of The Barclays golf tournament in Farmingdale, N.Y., Sunday, Aug. 28, 2016. He won The Barclays to assure himself a clear shot at the $10 million bonus in the FedEx Cup, and he easily secured a spot on his second consecutive U.S. Ryder Cup team. Not the part where Rickie Fowler, who looked assured of a Ryder Cup qualifying spot with four holes to play at the Barclays, stumbled down the stretch and failed to get it done.

Frazier finished with 79 yards on 11 carries, and Creighton Prep grad Easton Stick threw for 194 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. He needed only to finish alone in third place, which was the furthest from his mind as he battled Reed at Bethpage Black.

“This is about as tough a test as you get and I did great the first 10 holes”, said Fowler, who also took bogey at the 18th.

He didn’t flinch in the final round at The Barclays until he could afford a few mistakes.

Sean O’Hair leapt nearly 100 places in the FedEx Cup rankings with his closing 66 enough for a T2 finish alongside emerging Argentine Emiliano Grillo (69).

When asked if he knew the Ryder Cup implications as he finished his back nine, Fowler said: “Somewhat, but my main focus was winning. I’m not convinced he is the right answer for a US team that needs a karma makeover after years of being dominated by Europe”. Captain Davis Love III will choose four wild-card selections in September.

Defending champion and top-ranked Jason Day of Australia (70), Justin Thomas (66), Kevin Streelman (67) and Gary Woodland (68) are four shots behind in a tie for sixth.

Reed’s win moved him up to fourth place, and will be joined by PGA Champion Jimmy Walker, Brandt Snedeker and Zach Johnson.

However, a four-over-par back nine, including two bogeys and a double-bogey in his final four holes, saw him drop out of contention. One back to start the day, Reed took a step back with a bogey at the third before three quick birdies at 4, 5 and 7.

Reed put the tournament on ice on the penultimate hole, where he clung to a two-shot lead but left a lengthy birdie attempt 8 feet short.

Sung Kang matched the course record with a 64 to move from No. 122 to No. 88. Those missing out will be Shane Lowry, Peter Malnati, Robert Streb, Lucas Glover and Jonas Blixt. His win Sunday was the eighth straight in a Playoffs event for a player under 30 years old.
