Reese Witherspoon to host National Christmas Tree lighting

Although the ceremony is canceled, the Christmas tree will still be illuminated at 5:00 p.m.

The 45,000 lights on the Rockefeller Center tree go live Wednesday night, with a star atop the 78-foot tall Norway Spruce and an assortment of musical stars around its 47-foot wide base.

Rain inaugurated the annual Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting ceremony – with security restrictions including a prohibition on umbrellas.

Reese Witherspoon will be hosting the event with a special appearance by Miss Piggy of Muppets fame.

Wednesday, December 2, the Tree Lighting, hosts by the Boy and Girl Scouts, will take place on the corner of Summit Road and Park Avenue at 6 p.m. for more information, call Kathleen Volker at 908-403-6202.

The lighting of the National Christmas Tree was started by President Calvin Coolidge in 1923. “They come from all different organizations from all over Allen County, and each year we ask the people that decorate trees to incorporate the theme of the festival, the Majesty of Christmas”, said museum director, Patricia Smith.
