“It was an inspiration for my son to see Oscar and the others run”, – Gudny Gudmundsdottir from Iceland told the court the paralympian is a sporting inspiration for her son, who has a similar disability. I visualise it. I can see it myself.
Pistorius shouted “Get out!” and covered himself with a sheet, Mashabane said.
When he was convicted of culpable homicide, Pistorius received a sentence of five years.
Masipa initially acquitted Pistorius of murder at his trial in 2014, but her decision was overturned a year ago by South Africa’s Supreme Court and she will have to decide the new sentence.
Barry Steenkamp, a tall man, looked broken on the stand as he reminded the world that this protracted legal case was about the death of his daughter, and losing her was the greatest pain he had ever known.
Since being convicted of murder, Pistorius has been on bail and allowed to leave his uncle’s house at set times, but not travel further than 20 kilometres (12 miles) without permission.
Pistorius shot his girlfriend dead through a bathroom door in their home on Valentine’s Day 2013, but he has maintained that he thought he was shooting at an intruder.
“I talk to her every day”.
The original trial judge, Thokozile Masipa, is also presiding at the sentencing hearing, at Pretoria High Court.
Mr. Steenkamp said he would like to speak privately to Mr. Pistorius some day, but he is not ready yet.
“You must understand by forgiving like that it still does not exonerate you from the crime you have committed”, he said.
Olympian sprinter Oscar Pistorius posing next to his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp at Melrose Arch in Johannesburg, Jan. 26, 2013. “I talk to her every day in my head … my daughter”.
“Ever since Reeva’s death I have spent my time on my veranda, at two or three in the morning”.
“She must have been in so much fear, pain”, Mr Steenkamp said, his hands shaking at times.
Reeva Steenkamp’s father‚ trembling and weeping in the witness stand‚ on Tuesday spoke of his attempts to feel the pain he imagined his daughter must have felt in the “awful” moments before her murder.
He said: “What she must have gone through in those split seconds”.
He insisted that Pistorius “has to pay” for killing his daughter. The Paralympic gold medalist could face as many as 15 years in prison for the murder.
He also revealed he was “disgusted” when it came up in court that he and his wife had agreed, on the advice of his lawyers to receive money from the Pistorius family.
During cross-examination, Gerrie Nel questioned psychologist Prof Jonathan Scholtz on Pistorius’s behaviour in prison, saying: “Centre management reports that Mr Pistorius struggled to adapt and was aggressive and violent towards officials in the first month”.

Oscar Pistorius’ sentencing hearing for the murder will have testimony and closing arguments with the hearing expected to last until Friday. The cousin, Kim Martin, also criticized Pistorius for not testifying at this week’s hearing but agreeing to a television interview that will be broadcast after the hearing ends. Pistorius could be going straight back to the cell after the sentencing hearing.
