The report on the crash of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 is expected to be completed in October.
At the crash site in eastern Ukraine, around 200 villagers gathered to remember the day bodies and plane parts fell from the sky.
In Canberra, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott unveiled a plaque inscribed with the names of Australian victims, which is set in soil that a police officer brought back from Ukraine.
The procession in Ukraine mainly consisted of women and children who carried icons and chanted Orthodox liturgical music, with the perimeter of the march guarded by men in Soviet military uniforms.
Residents of the Ukrainian village where a Malaysian airliner was shot down with 298 people aboard marked the disaster’s anniversary Friday, as newly obtained video showed Russian-backed rebels rummaging through the charred plane’s wreckage soon after the crash.
The bill passed Friday by the Rada said local elections will not be held in Russia-occupied Crimea or in rebel-held eastern districts because Ukrainian officials have no access to those areas.
Rebel leader Alexander Zakharchenko, who arrived at the commemoration ceremony on crutches and surrounded by a posse of gunmen, accused the Ukrainian government of taking down MH17.
“It would not have happened without participation, without a direct order from the highest political and military leadership of the neighbouring state”, said Poroshenko.
This story was first published on CNN.com, “MH17: Australia slams video appearing to show crash aftermath”.
“Nothing that’s said or done can bring them back, little can ease the grief that all who knew them still feel”.
“Any death is a tragedy, all the more so when civilians die”, he said, surrounded by a posse of gunmen, adding that the rebels did their best to help the investigators and the families of the victims. Some kissed the bouquets before they placed them down, while others kissed their fingers and pressed them against the plaque.
Later Poroshenko claimed that Kiev would reclaim the regions which are now controlled by rebels, and “a memorial to the 298 innocent victims of the barbarian act of terrorism” would be put up.
Aljuned, the co-pilot’s widow, summed up the feelings of relatives when she told them, “We do not know how much we love a person until we lose them”.
Flight MH17 is believed to have been shot down by pro-Russian rebels.
“It is sickening to watch and 12 months on from the downing of MH17 it is deeply concerning that this footage has emerged now”, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop told the Nine Network, without being able to verify the authenticity of the video.
Flags on Dutch government buildings around the country were flying at half-staff throughout the day. The Netherlands is leading the criminal investigation and is being assisted by Belgium, Australia and Ukraine.
― Reuters picWASHINGTON, July 18 ― The USA envoy to the United Nations called yesterday for responsible parties to be “brought to justice” for the downing of flight MH17 over eastern Ukraine one year ago.
