Relatives of Alan Kurdi arrive in Vancouver later today
The image of three-year-old Alan Kurdi’s lifeless body on a Turkish beach shocked the world in early September.

Mohammed Kurdi, his wife and five children will land in Canada as refugees, sponsored by Mohammed’s sister Tima Kurdi, who has become a spokeswoman for people fleeing the war torn nation.
Alan’s father Abdullah Kurdi lives in Iraq’s Kurdistan region and has decided against travelling to Canada.
Alan Kurdi drowned when a boat attempting the perilous crossing from Turkey to Greece, capsized.
The brother and sister are planning to work together at Tima’s new hair salon, Kurdi Hair Design.
On everyone’s mind, though, were the absent – Tima and Mohammad’s brother, Abdullah, who survived an ill-fated voyage across the Mediterranean, and his wife and their two sons, who did not.
The family is just a few of the tens of thousands of people that the Canadian government has promised to resettle.
Darryl Dyck/AP Tima Kurdi, who lives in the Vancouver area, lifts up her 5-month-old nephew Sherwan Kurdi after the family’s arrival in Canada.
Speaking through his sister, who translated from Arabic, Mohammed Kurdi also thanked Canadians and the government for making his dreams come true.
Mohammed has been working in Germany for the last half-year, while the rest of his family lived in Turkey.
Tima Kurdi said the entire family of seven will join her family of three in their Vancouver home. He is the father of Alan Kurdi, the Syrian toddler whose photograph galvanized the world around the refugee crisis. He had yet to meet his youngest child, who was born in July, but the family reunited in Frankfurt before flying to Canada.
“Thank you to the Canadian people”.
“There’s always a light at the end of the tunnel… keep walking until you find that light”. However, she said that she understands its power.
The Liberals have committed to taking in 25,000 refugees by the end of February, although they admit they will likely fall short of their revised target to settle 10,000 by the end of the year.
Kurdi says she’s humbled by the outpouring of support her family has received, although she has also had to endure an onslaught of negative comments from online trolls.
“Maybe that will change a little bit when I see their smiles and they are safe”, she says, referring to Mohammad’s family.
