He had pancreatic cancer, reports NBC News, and though his family is still mourning his loss, they suggest the return of the balloons-sort of like a message in a bottle-has lightened their grief.

On the first Father’s Day since John Seibold died, his widow Sandy and teenage daughter Saige decided to release a ‘#1 Dad’ balloon and handwritten letter at his grave in Oklahoma, USA. “He passed away in May”.

“We thought the idea of sending balloons to heaven sounded good”, Sandy told KFOR. They released a balloon carrying a letter, eulogizing their loved one and asking anyone who found it to contact them.

At first, the tribute did not go to plan when ribbons tied to the balloons became caught up in a power line above the graveyard. “Let these balloons fly for her”, Sandy said.

Fortunately a gust of wind dislodged them and they drifted away.

Sandy and Saige left the cemetery and make the 25-mile trek back home.

“What are the chances?” I think I started crying because it was just like it was a message from him.

“It has given us a lot of peace and, you know, just feeling good about where he’s at”.
