Mukesh Ambani, Reliance’s chairman and the richest man in India, noted, “India and Indians can not afford to be left behind”, Ambani said. “The launch of Reliance Jio, with its highly affordable data packs will disrupt the way people use internet in India as cost is a major factor in determining consumption patterns”.
Voice calling for Jio users will be free for life, so will be national roaming.
For starters, Ambani announced subscribers on the 4G network will enjoy unlimited free voice calls, zero roaming charges and dirt-cheap data tariffs.
With that aim in mind, Reliance Jio will also start rolling out fibre-to-home wireline network in select cities, and is also looking at extending its optical fibre network to enterprise locations.
Reliance, through its ads, dedicated the Jio 4G service to the Modi government’s flagship Digital India project.
“In our data plans, the effective rates will be 5p per MB or Rs 50 per GB”. It is also claiming to offer the cheapest 4G LTE data rates in the world.
# Reliance Jio to be launched on September 5, commercial launch on December 31.
Ambani yesterday also announced a target to draw 100 million customers to Jio in the shortest possible time. Note: SMS charges are applicable as per the existing mobile operator.
JIo’s network has been called the “largest 4G LTE deployment anywhere int he world”. The news even led to a Buzzfeed story titled “Reliance Jio Announced A Bunch Of Free Services, And Twitter Lost Its Goddamn Mind”.
Shares of India’s two biggest listed carriers, which have been bracing for months for the entry of Jio, tumbled on concern they face losing customers to Ambani.
If you are disappointed that Jio Preview Offer is not available on your smartphone, fret not.
