Reliance Jio announces free voice calls, cheaper data tariffs

In terms coverage, the operator now covers 18,000 cities and 200,000 villages and RJIL plans to cover 90% of the population by March 2017.

The promise of a never before pricing for data and free voice calls, something the Indian market hasn’t witnessed before, had already piqued user’s interest.

Mr Ambani also urged the incumbent operators “not to misuse their market power by creating unfair hurdles”, and accused the entrenched providers of providing Jio with insufficient points of interconnection (PoIs).

The company also announced “super-affordable” handsets under the LYF brand starting Rs 2,999.

JIo’s network has been called the “largest 4G LTE deployment anywhere int he world”.

Jio will offer only fourth-generation services in India. Jio music will have as many as 10 million songs.

There will also be no roaming charges, across India, to any network, it was announced.

The announcements came against the backdrop of a series of discounts and freebies offered by existing layers like Airtel, Vodafone and Idea during the past month, ostensibly to ensure customers stay with them, even after the commercial launch of Jio.

Airtel’s shares fell 6.5 per cent, while Idea dropped 11 per cent and Reliance declined 3 per cent at the close in Mumbai. Reliance Jio, which has seen investments of around $20 billion so far, will offer free voice calls and cheaper 4G data, the company said today.
