Roaming charges would also be abandoned on the network, Ambani said, adding that porting into Jio can begin with the launch of commercial services.

Ambani’s announcement triggered declines in rivals’ shares, paring $1.8 billion off the market value of Bharti Airtel Ltd and Idea Cellular Ltd. “Pay for only one service – either voice or data, not both”, as Ambani said.

Following this time, voice calls will remain free and data packs will be 5-10 times lower than the effective rate through rival plans now on the market.

Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (Jio) launched its digital services with Jio Welcome Offer which will be effective from 5 September, 2016.

Jio, which is also set to offer free roaming to all clients across the country, will eventually charge a base rate of about 50 rupees ($0.7468) per gigabyte of data, and data charges will fall even more for heavier data users. Mr Ambani on Thursday announced a target to draw 100 million customers to Jio “in the shortest possible time”. But according to the experts, Idea has no other options than reducing its data and voice call tariff if it really wants to tackle the boosting influence of ultra-affordable 4G data plans of Reliance Jio.

Existing operators under the aegis of Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) have been locked in a battle with Reliance Jio over providing points of interconnect.

“The company has also filed the tariff plans for wireless services with Trai”. However, if you are still thinking what exactly “Reliance Jio’ is, then here’s a pocket guide for you”. Following this, Country’s second largest service provider Vodafone made the first step by offering 20GB of data for R998 per month in Gujarat circle, at about 33% discount to Reliance Jio’s offer of R1,499 a month.
