August 24th is 8/24, which happen to be the two numbers he wore in his Lakers career.

Los Angeles is already missing Kobe Bryant in a Lakers jersey.
The presentation touched upon various aspects of Bryants career, the 33,463 career points, the work he has done with the Kobe and Vanessa Bryant Foundation, even his short-lived stint as a hip hop artist. It’s also one day after Bryant’s 38th birthday.
Bryant expressed gratitude for being able to play with his favorite team during his entire National Basketball Association career, and said when he first came to Los Angeles, he did not think he would be standing in City Council today receiving this honor.
On Monday, the L.A. City Council announced that this Wednesday will be known as “Kobe Bryant Day”.
“No matter where you live in L.A. throughout our incredibly diverse city, when Kobe Bryant and the Lakers were playing, we were all Angelenos, united watching greatness the likes of which we will rarely see again”, said Councilmember Jose Huizar. “Keep showing up, keep practicing and, yes, keep winning”. “And together we will do that, and certainly we will win championship after championship”.

Huizar said Byrant should be admired not just because he is “unbelievably talented”, but because he “has taught all of us in Los Angeles that this city has a fighting spirit”. He called the experience “surreal” and jokingly said someone would have to explain to his unborn daughter why “daddy has a day named for him”.
