“But I’ll do all I can that a referendum takes place and they have a chance to express their view”.

“The best person to lead Britain out of the European Union is someone who argued to get Britain out of the European Union”, Gove said.

Boris Johnson appears to be pulling the knife from his back as he admits to feeling “betrayed” by Michael Gove.

The victor of the contest, to be announced September 9, will become prime minister and play a vital role shaping the nature of Britain’s relationship with the European Union after last week’s Brexit vote ended the career of Cameron, whose bid to keep Britain in the EU block failed.

Gove admitted that he is not charismatic but promised to bring significant change after the country leaves the European Union.

“Michael Gove knifed Boris Johnson in the back and in the front”, she said.

Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper on Friday backed Theresa May’s bid to become the next prime minister, saying she was the only one out of five candidates for the Conservative Party leadership who was up to the job.

Gove is up against May and three other candidates to succeed Cameron as party leader and prime minister.

Laying out his support for the Home Secretary, Mr Fallon said: “As Defence Secretary, I’ve worked closely with Theresa on security and she is the right person to steer Britain through the serious challenges we now face”.

Gove’s comments are likely to annoy European Union leaders, who have put strong pressure on Britain to start talks soon on leaving the 28-nation bloc. “I don’t think he is called Brutus, but you never know”.

“My role will be to give every possible support to the next Conservative administration, to make sure were properly fulfill the mandate of the people that was delivered at the referendum, and to champion the agenda I believe in”, Johnson said.

Ms Leadsom refused to comment on whether she thought Mr Gove had made a decision to run after growing concerned Mr Johnson would renege on policies because he failed to give her an assurance of a top job under his leadership.

She said: ” Boris negotiated in Europe.

“I was one of those who personally was appalled by the idea of Boris Johnson being Prime Minister, but I’ve not fallen out with him personally”.

Mr Gove drew attention to the poor perception of him from certain quarters of the public. The first vote will take place on July 5 and the victor will be declared on September 9. “My judgment about what is right for this country will always guide me and on that basis I came reluctantly and with a heavy heart”. “He has knocked billions off the value of the nation’s savings”, he told BBC 5 Live.
