He said gardaí believed the pregnancy probably went to full term and early indications from a medical examination suggested the death occurred recently.

The alarm was raised at 11am and shortly after a local GP, the State Pathologist’s Office and the Garda Technical Bureau were notified.

The facility takes waste from all over the country and a statement from Greenstar said that it would assist officers in their inquiries.

Superintendent Pat Ward who is in charge of the investigation said: “We don’t know what exactly happened leading up to the birth of the baby”.

On closer inspection he realised it was the remains of an unclothed baby.

The Gardaí are keeping an open mind on whether the case is a personal tragedy or a criminal matter.

“Our main concern is for mum to contact us and to get medical attention because quite obviously she’s going to be in a very very distressed state and she will need medical attention”.

The mother of the child was asked to contact Supt Ward or Sergeant Fitzpatrick at Bray Garda Station on 016665300.
