Renee Zellweger on Society’s Obsession With Her Looks

“I’ve never seen the maturation of a woman as a negative thing”, Zellweger told THR’s Laurie Sandell.

She then spoke of how Bridget Jones as a character helps to reduce the pressure that society puts on women, saying “She reminds us that outside of beauty everybody has something to contribute”.

With her blonde hair tousled into loose waves, and wearing just a hint of makeup, 47-year-old Renee smiled as she waved to fans who had gathered at the venue, before happily signing autographs along with Patrick.

“We are made to believe that there’s some value in meeting a social paradigm”.

During an appearance on NBC’s Today in March, she explained that she doesn’t pay attention to what’s being said or written about her.

Zellweger was highly criticised for her appearance when she came back in the industry in 2014 after two years of break as many rumoured that she had a plastic surgery. She said “It’s not really part of my life”. It’s been six years since Renee Zellweger last was seen on the silver screen and now that she’s back in the spotlight, she’s not holding back.

“And just like that/ All I breathe/ All I feel/ You are all for me/ No one can lift me, catch me the way you do/ I’m still falling for you”.

As for why she took such a long break from making movies (her last film was a little known movie entitled “My Own Love Song”, starring fellow Oscar victor Forest Whitaker) and what she did with her time off, the star explained her reasoning behind her hiatus from the lime light to American Way Magazine for American Airlines.

At the time she dismissed the speculation as ‘silly’. “I craved the creative process again”. Bridget Jones’s Baby premieres on September 16th.
