Al Jazeera’s Mike Hanna, reporting from NY, said there was a general sense of panic and chaos at the “immensely” busy airport.

Police evacuated the airport’s Terminal 8 as a precaution after receiving reports of shots fired near the departures area.

No gun casings were found after a search of Terminal 8, where reports of gunshots in the departures area prompted an evacuation, the Port Authority of NY and New Jersey said in a message on social network Twitter.

As a result of the scare, a ground stop was issued for John F. Kennedy Airport at 10:15 p.m., though flights at the airport had already disrupted due to bad weather. “No shots were fired”.

The Port Authority also said a preliminary investigation found no shots were fired at JFK and there were no injuries.

The NYPD also confirmed early Monday that there were no shots fired and the airport would resume normal operations shortly after midnight.

Passengers posted pictures and videos on Twitter that showed crowds of people gathered outside of the terminals.

Police were searching for a suspect – or suspects – and evacuated the area.

A passenger at JFK tweeted, “Panic at jfk theyre closing the gates at security-possible shooter”.
