Republican convention: Defiant Ted Cruz defends decision not to endorse Donald Trump

The Texas senator added that he was not eager to come and speak at the GOP convention after Trump threatened to “spill the beans” on his wife and accused his father of helping the assassin of former President John F. Kennedy.

Appointees account for just more than 3,000 federal employees, with less than a thousand appointed by Obama and past presidents, according to Reuters. His ideas have been divisive, even nasty.

Trump prepared for his big night amid another flap over his commitment to US military alliances, including North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. It failed, but nevertheless demonstrated a fractured GOP yet to fix the wounds from a bitter primary. Reagan did that better than any Republican president since the 1950s.

Can Trump do that?

Trump and Cruz were at loggerheads on the primary campaign trail: Cruz complaining that Trump was not a proper conservative and about his allegedly liberal “New York values” while the tycoon savaged Cruz as “Lyin’ Ted” and posted a deeply unflattering photograph of his banker wife, Heidi.

But shared anger is a weak bond.

Trump’s roller-coaster campaign defeated 16 rivals and steamrolled stubborn party opposition after being written off as a joke.

Pro-Trump delegates were furious about his speech. The convention takes place at the Cleveland, Ohio Quicken Loans Arena. The full text leaked to the Politico site included six uses of the word, “back”, zero uses of the word, “forward”, with the word “future” making a cameo appearance in closing.

Through it all, Cruz stalwartly refused to condemn Trump. “For Trump, and for America”. Sounds like a boss who asks his No. 2 to do all the work while he takes all the credit, doesn’t it?

Trump believes he can win without them.

After speaking to N.C. delegates Thursday, Trump’s son Eric said he thought the speech – and the loud reaction – showed party unity. While less than half of Americans support the law, they also express skepticism toward repealing it entirely. Too many jobs are leaving our country for foreign lands.

“Most people are protesting peacefully”.

The day’s demonstrations started when a few dozen people holding banners printed with a red-brick design formed a human wall to mock Donald Trump’s plan to seal off the Mexican border.

Repealing Obamacare: Trump promised to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, a position that receives wide support among Republicans but mixed reviews from the public overall. He doesn’t adhere to the same political calculus. He is bringing “average” people into the political process. And he relies on political newcomers to help run his campaign and formulate policy. Others, however, are popular among Republicans but lack strong appeal with the broader electorate.

He is opportunistic and unpredictable.

With all of his weaknesses politically, Trump could very well lose the election. The Clinton campaign machine is nothing if not powerful and adept. The hotel, co-owned and managed by the Trump Organization, agreed to a settlement Thursday that will see them pay $11,200 in lost wages to the two workers, the Los Angeles Times reported. “I ain’t gonna do it. I’m not interested in Republican on Republican violence”.

It was the first of four bankruptcy filings by Trump companies. “The independents would beat the Republicans!”

Many establishment Republicans and evangelicals are said to be on the fence over whether to vote for Trump or not, and much of their decision may ride on Trump’s performance Thursday night. Instead, everyone from New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie to Gen. Mike Flynn to anonymous Republican National Committee functionaries lit into Cruz as a traitor. This has become the “lock her up” convention. The question is, what does that mean to Trump? “Not only will you be able to watch gavel-to-gavel coverage of the conventions wherever you are, but for the first time, we’ll live stream the conventions in 360 degrees, so you’ll feel what it’s like to be in the center of the action”.

Can Trump present a more complete vision that reluctant Republicans and undecided independents can buy into?

Not long afterward, Trump’s oldest daughter, Ivanka, introduced her father.
