Republican convention down and dirty
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie whipped the Republican National Convention into a frenzy as he staged a mock trial of the likely Democratic presidential candidate.

Pat Smith lost her son, Sean, in the attack on the USA embassy in Benghazi in 2012.
“It is time to come together and make sure that Donald Trump is the next president of the United States”. When Rep. Steve Womack of Arkansas tried to get delegates to accept the rules just by yelling “yea” or “nay”, the convention floor erupted into chaos.
The governor quoted Mr. Trump as responding, “How much does the check need to be?” That might reasonably have been interpreted as a focus on the economy and job creation, but the session had hardly begun before the convention jumped the rails to its favourite pastime – bashing Hillary Clinton, the Democratic nominee.
And we’ll not even address claims that a couple of lines from Trump jnr’s speech seemed to have been lifted from an essay written by a Canadian law professor – because as we discovered the previous evening, when lines from Michelle Obama’s 2008 convention speech found their way into Melania Trump’s convention speech, the Trump campaign does not see that as plagiarism. Trump frequently says he is better equipped to be president because of his business experience.
That prompted Republicans in the audience to break into a chant of “lock her up, lock her up, lock her up”.
Libya, he said, has an economy in ruins, “death and violence in the streets and ISIS now dominating the country” after “she was the chief engineer of our disastrous overthrow of Qaddafi”.
Carson’s indictment of Clinton was to link her to Lucifer – yes, as in the Devil. And Bill Pickle, a SC delegate and talk radio host, said those doing the name-calling “sound and act like demons”.
Clinton later rallied supporters in North Las Vegas, where she picked up the endorsement of the 270,000-member UNITE HERE union that represents workers in the hotel, gaming and food service industries.
“I personally hate – I mean hate – all of the negativity”, Pickle said.
“If you closed your eyes, you could imagine it being a lot like a witch trial – they were barely one step removed from screaming ‘burn her at the stake, ‘” the email said. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Clinton is unreliable. She lied about her server.
On Wednesday, Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort mused that Attorney General Loretta Lynch had “probably” given special information to Bill Clinton that helped his wife avoid criminal charges, during a brief airport meeting that Lynch has acknowledged was a mistake.
