Republican Evan McMullin to launch presidential run against Trump

Conservative Republicans have recruited a former Central Intelligence Agency staffer and top House GOP aide to launch an independent White House bid against Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.

BuzzFeed News and MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough first reported the bid.

He became a senior adviser to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs in 2013 before taking a position as chief policy director for the House Republican Conference.

“In a year where Americans have lost faith in the candidates of both major parties, it’s time for a generation of new leadership to step up”, McMullin said.

“Standing up to run for president because it’s never too late to do the right thing”, McMullin’s Twitter biography said on Monday.

McMullin was born in Provo, Utah, and earned a bachelor’s degree in global law and diplomacy from Brigham Young University and a master’s of business administration from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He promises to be “a leader who can give millions of disaffected Americans a conservative choice for President”, despite never holding elected office before. Veteran Republican strategist Rick Wilson, a Florida-based media consultant and outspoken Trump critic, is expected to be involved in McMullin’s campaign. He served from 1999 to 2010 before taking a job as an investment banking associate at Goldman Sachs.

According to ABC, his bid was arranged by the anti-Trump group, Better for America, which spent months searching for an appropriate candidate and is prepared to back him financially.

One big problem though: McMullin missed the deadline to get on the general election ballot in 26 states, and in some others, like California, he will have to collect tens of thousands of signatures in the next several days.

This guy has even less credibility to run than the last name floated, National Review’s David French.
